Project Hawker Hurricane (HC-452)

The primary motivation behind this blog is my own personal interest towards old aircraft and photography which I am studying at the moment. I was granted a great opportunity by the Aviation Museum of Central Finland to photograph the restoration project of former Finnish Air Force Hawker Hurricane Mk. I HC-452 fighter aircraft. I tend to add weekly news from the project with photographs. I believe that this is also a good opportunity to show the hard behind the scenes work which takes place during a project like this.

Uusivuosi uudet kujeet, First visit of the year

English translation below this chapter.

Tänään oli tämän vuoden ensimmäinen visiitti museolle. Ajattelin, että voisin tällä kertaa pureskella hieman Hawker Hurricanen historiaa. Asia tuli puheeksi kun olin lähdössä museolta ja raotin hieman tulevaa blogia, jossa ajattelin kertoa koneen historiasta. Kysäisin lähdönpäällä, että olisiko museolla mitään materiaalia asiasta. Mikko otti myyntipöydältä tuoreen kirjan (Albatrossista Pilatukseen Suomen sotilaskoneet 1918-2010). Kirjasta löytyi hyvä ja napakka tietoisku Hurricanen historiasta, jota ajattelin käyttää lähteenä. Kirjan sain vielä lahjoituksena museon vt. johtajalta Rauni Valtoselta blogin pitämisestä :)

Today was my first visit at the museum for the year 2012. I thought that this time I’d start with a brief overview of the Hawker Hurricane fighter aircraft. The idea for this came up when I was about the leave the museum. I asked the guys whether they would have some related books available on the subject. The answer came quickly. Museum’s deputy director Mrs. Rauni Valtonen donated me a book from the museum’s own inventory called “Albatrossista Pilatukseen: Suomen sotilaskoneet 1918-2010”. This book is part of the museum’s own aviation book series. From this book I was able to pick up all the necessary details.

The chief designer of the British aviation company Hawker, Sydney Camm started to develop a low-wing fighter which hull structure was based on the successful Hawker Fury biplane fighter. The first flight of the prototype took place on November 6 1937. It was the first monoplane fighter aircraft of the Royal Air Force which had retractable landing gear.

Tehokkaamalla moottorilla varustetun Hurricane IIA:n valmistus alkoi elokuussa 1940. Viimeinen tuotantomuunnos oli 1620hv:n moottorilla varustettu Hurricane IV, jonka valmistus loppui elokuussa 1944.

Nearly 500 Hurricane fighters had been build when the Second World War started. At that time the Hurricane was already a bit outdated as a first line fighter. It’s thick wing profile limited top speed and hindered further development efforts. Earlier production models had fabric covered wings. In late 1939 all metal wings started to appear in later production model Hurricanes. Starting from March 1940 all Hurricanes were fitted with all metal wings. The production of Hurricane IIA started in August 1940. It also carried a more powerful engine. Last production model Hurricane was known as Hurricane IV and it carried a 1620 hp engine. The production of Hurricane IV ended in August 1944.

Kaikkiaan Hurricanen eri muunnoksia rakennettiin 14 233 kpl, joista 1448 Kanadassa, kaksi Belgiassa ja 20 Jugoslaviassa. Lähes 3000 konetta vietiin Neuvostoliittoon.
Suomen ilmavoimat osti 17.2.1940 Isosta-Britanniasta 12 käytännössä uutta Hurricane I –konetta. Suomalaiset hakivat koneet Britanniasta, jossa he saivat lyhyen tyyppikoulutuksen. Koneet tuotiin lentämällä Pohjanmeren yli Skotlannista Norjaan. Siirtolennolla menetettiin kaksi. HU461 vaurioitui laskussa Wickissä Skotlannissa ja jäi sinne. HU462 tuhoutui törmättyään puhelinpylvääseen ohjaajan ”räimiessä” Stavangerin lähistöllä. Hurricanet saapuivat Suomeen 7-10.3.1940.  Niitä ei käytetty taisteluissa.

In total 14 233 Hurricanes were produced in several different types. 1 448 fighters were build in Canada, two in Belgium and 20 in Yugoslavia. Nearly 3 000 Hurricanes were send to the Soviet Union. The Finnish Air Force bought 12 practically new Hurricane Mk I’s from Britain on February 17 1940. The total flight times of these planes were just a few hours. The Hurricanes were part of RAF reserves which were taken out from storage and then sold to Gloster Aircraft Co. Gloster sold these planes to Finland. Some were fitted with fabric covered wings. Finnish pilots flew the planes to Finland from the UK. A selected group of Finnish pilots also received short training for the Hurricane while in Britain. The planes were flown over the North Sea from Scotland to Norway. Two Hurricanes were lost during the ferry flight. HU461 was damaged  during landing at Wick in Scotland and the plane was left there. HU462 was destroyed when the pilot hit a telephone poll near Stavanger in Norway. Hurricanes arrived in Finland between March 7 and March 10 1940. They saw no action during the Winter War.

The use of the legendary Hurricane fighter here in Finland remained insignificant because there were so few planes available to the Finnish Air Force. Also the shortage of spare parts was a limiting factor. A total of just 5½ aerial victories were achieved with the Hurricane. The opinion of Finnish fighter pilots was that the Hurricane was quite easy plane to fly because of its handling characteristics. However the plane was thought to be a bit clumsy at low flying altitudes. The plane was originally designed for altitudes above 4 000 meters. The Hurricane was the first fighter aircraft in Finnish Air Force inventory which exceeded 500 km/h in level flight.

Now it’s time to take a look at the repair shop and see what has happened to the Hurricane itself. This time some work had been done with the electrical wirings of the instrument panel. This kind of work takes time but it doesn’t show itself so clearly. Upper part for control stick, starting magneto switch and a priming pump had been received for the project. During this visit I spend most of my time taking photographs for Harri. He needed some pictures of the wiring system and different instrument panel switches. I also took an interest on the gun sight. The cross hair of the gun sight is reflected with light to the pilot’s front view. The light source is a small light bulb just below the gun sight. The light bulb itself can be changed even during flight. Three reserve light bulbs can also be found on the right side of the gun sight.
I started to think about a situation were you would be flying in a fierce dogfight and right in the middle of the fight your light bulb busts. You are just about to get the enemy plane on your cross hairs and something like this happens. But you don’t have to worry about the situation too long. You would just have to unclick the clip which holds the light bulb in place and screw one of your reserve bulbs in place. All this can be done while flying at speeds of 400 km/h dodging enemy bullets. Luckily there are three reserve light bulbs just in case you would accidentally drop one on the cockpit floor. After a successful change you would have to get behind the enemy plane and give him a full burst from your machine guns. I believe all this demonstrates quite clearly the innovative thinking typical for World War Two era aircraft. I don’t think that you could repair a modern F-18 Hornet just as easily in case your gun sight or head-up-display goes bust while on a combat mission.

Pullossa oleva ohjetekstikin (Use no oil or grease they cause explosions) jäljennettiin ja maalattiin uudelleen.

Among the other useful equipment the oxygen bottle was also removed from the plane. Suitable British type so called "wire bottle" was found from the museum storage. Bottle is named so because it's reinforced with a double layer of steel wire on the cylinder's flat part so that a higher pressure can be used than was originally intended. On the early Hurricanes this bottle was without wire reinforcement, this detail was confirmed from a photograph. It was also impossible to install the bottle on a rack in HC-452 with wire reinforcement on it's place. Valve on the bottle was exactly correct VD type as is mentioned in a manual. Also the oxygen pipe and it's assorted connector, that were never removed from the plane fitted perfectly on the bottle.
Wire reinforcement was removed from the bottle and it was sandblasted clean. After that it was repainted,  original warning text (Use no oil or grease they cause explosions) was naturally reproduced accurately.

Reissun lopuksi halusin kuvata Lauri Pekurin BW-372, joka on nähtävillä museossa.
Kone nostettiin 1998 elokuussa. Kuvassa taustalla omia sukelluskuvia sekä Lauri Pekuri koneen viimeinen lentäjä.

At the end of the visit I wanted to take a few pictures of the exhibition hall’s Brewster BW-372 flown by a Finnish fighter ace Lauri Pekuri. Just before this I challenged Harri for a coffee & doughnut at the museum coffee shop. After enjoying the necessary refreshments it was indeed time to take the photos. We took out the lights from the exhibition hall and I setup my flashes around the Brewster. The photo shoot proved to be quite a challenge. Below this text you can see the end result of the picture. I decided to place the Brewster below the surface of Lake Seesjärvi where it had ditched after a fierce air battle on June 25 1942. The plane was lifted from the lake in August 1998. I created the background using my own scuba diving pictures. I also placed the pilot Lauri Pekuri on the background.

Kuva itse kertokoon...
I think the picture speaks for itself…

The story of this visit ends now and I begin to make plans for my next visit.
And just one more message to Harri: The photoflash system works after all.
