Project Hawker Hurricane (HC-452)

The primary motivation behind this blog is my own personal interest towards old aircraft and photography which I am studying at the moment. I was granted a great opportunity by the Aviation Museum of Central Finland to photograph the restoration project of former Finnish Air Force Hawker Hurricane Mk. I HC-452 fighter aircraft. I tend to add weekly news from the project with photographs. I believe that this is also a good opportunity to show the hard behind the scenes work which takes place during a project like this.

March 30: Once again it proved to be a pleasure to take up the camera and head towards
Tikkakoski now when spring has turned back into winter (it’s snowing wildly). Luckily
my Peugeot still has winter tires on. The guys were in action at the museum. Harri was
painting new swastika insignias on the wings while using removable layer between the
old and new insignias. Antti was working with the plexiglas attachtments of the landing
gear system. The biggest change which I noticed at once was the canopy which had been
installed on the plane. Also the swastika insignias had been restored. I was wondering
why Harri was working with a removable layer before painting new insignias on the plane.
The answer was simple. Everything the guys do to the plane during the restoration must
be recorded. Accordingly there must be means and ways to cancel things that have gone
wrong and thus removable layers are used. A pair of tyres had showed up to the repair
shop as well as a pilot’s leather flying cap. Afterwards I thought that it would have been
great to take a seat in the cockpit with the headgear on. Well, maybe next time then. The
boys had also done some wirings inside the hull.

I thought that it would be nice to talk a bit about the flying characteristics of the plane as
well as the experiences of Finnish pilots who actually flew the aircraft. This proved to be
a real challenge. Written information on these subjects was difficult to find. We visited the
museum’s archive and library but we draw a blank. However we did find a binder labelled
Esko Ruotsila. This proved to be interesting and I will have to get back to this binder some
other time. After some research we did come by some comments on the Hurricane written
by the pilots and engineers. I would have wanted some recollections of veteran pilots but
the general feeling of the pilots themselves was that the Hurricane was not so interesting
aircraft to fly. Also none of those Finnish fighter pilots who actually flew with the type are
still alive. Still I think that comments about the plane being “uninteresting to fly” are quite
difficult to swallow. Here are some details:

Ohjaamo

Cockpit

You step into the plane from the left side. The cockpit is fairly large but looks a
bit “Spartan” and simple. A bit like the Gloster Gladiator or the Fokker D.XXI. In a sense
there is no floor and the pilots feet are placed on separate plates. The seat can be lifted
horizontally upwards and downwards. The pedals can be moved sideways. The canopy
moves easily and it is light to operate. The long nose of the Hurricane gives poor front
visibility and it’s difficult to see backwards.

The controls and levers are simple and clear. The trigger for the machine guns can be
found on the control stick. From the left side of the instrument panel you can find the
throttle lever, mixture lever, trim wheels and the lever which controls the attitude of the
propeller blades. The combined lever for the undercarriage and flaps is located on the
right side. On both sides you can find a levers and switches for the emergency deployment
of the landing gear and manual hydraulic pump among others.

The instrument panel itself is quite clear and well equipped. The artificial horizon as well as many other flight
instruments are manufactured by the Sperry Co. You can also find magneto switches, start
button and the gun sight on the panel.

Lento-ominaisuudet

Flight characteristics

The Hurricane was an easy plane to fly by any standards. It was much easier to fly than
the Fokker D.XXI for example. It had effective flaps, variable pitch propeller and retractable
landing gear. These were new aviation innovations of the mid and late 1930’s and it took
time and effort (as well as casualties) to learn how to use them properly. The Hurricane’s
longitudinal stability was slightly positive while flying on normal loading. Longitudinal
control was sensitive but not overly so. The force needed to use the control stick in relation
to speed was small enough. The rudder was heavy on greater speeds but otherwise the
harmony was quite good on the controls. The Hurricane was a stable gun platform. The
flaps were light and effective.

On the other hand, the Hurricane’s big wing proved to be a handicap in a dogfight
situation. Pitching the aircraft was slow and this effect was enhanced by the eight wing
mounted machine guns and their ammunition. Engine power could have been better in
comparison on the size of the aircraft. In a dive the drag caused by the big and thick wing
was clearly seen. The engine could cut itself while on a steed climb. The turning radius
of the Hurricane was small. The Hurricane could have been a good bomber interceptor
aircraft in the Winter War against Soviet SB-2’s and DB-3’s. That’s if the Hurricanes had
arrived in time. During the Continuation War the Soviets received Hurricane II’s from the
western allies and they proved unsuccessful against Finnish Brewsters. In part this was
caused by the differences in pilot quality. According to POW information the Hurricane was
not a particularly popular aircraft in the Soviet Air Force. It was deemed to be “a bit odd”.
One Finnish pilot named Uuno Karhumäki commented the controls of the Hurricane: “it felt
just like there had been rubber band connected between every control mechanism.”

Jonkinlaisena ketteryyden mittapuuna voitaneen pitää 180 asteen kaartoaikaa, joksi sain 300km/t nopeudella 10 sekuntia.
Vaikka Hurricanessa onkin pienikaliberiset aseet 7,7mm, on tuliteho hyvä, koska kaikki 8 konekivääriä on suunnattu 200 metrille, mikä on pienin etäisyys, jossa kaikkien aseiden suihkut saadaan yhtymään. Tällöin osumakuvion halkaisija on noin 1 metri. Kun tulinopeus on 1200 laukausta minuutissa, saadaan mainitulle alalle 1 sekunnissa 160 luotia.

The final comments of Lt. Räty on the Hurricane Mk.1

Hurricanes did not take part in the Winter War. They remained on alert status at Säkylä
but they didn’t meet any enemy aircraft on their operational area. Thus no experiences
on the Hurricane’s performance while in combat situations were received. However it is
my opinion that because of it’s great speed and firepower the Hurricane would have been
effective against bombers. Against other fighters it would have been only possible to use
boom and zoom tactics because the Hurricane is not an agile aircraft. Dogfighting must

be avoided. As a measurement on it’s agility a 180 degree turn can be used. At speeds
of 300 km/h this takes 10 seconds to complete. Although the Hurricane only carries small
calibre 7,7mm machine guns it has good hitting power because all 8 guns are calibrated to
a distance of 200 meters. This is the smallest possible distance were all the guns and their
fire can be joined. This gives a pattern which has a diameter of 1 meter. The rate of fire of
the guns is around 1200 rounds per minute. This means that in one second a total of 160
bullets will hit the target area.

Iso pieni maailma, A big small world

After a while I was finally able to get my old Peugeot 205 GTI back in driving condition. It was nice to get back to the museum and enjoy my old car. After getting there I went out to look for the boys. This time I was able to locate them right at the repair shop. At first Harri was missing but the guys notified me that he was hoovering the aircraft at the main display hall. This was done because of the Finnish Air Force Anniversary Day which was approaching in early March. Traditionally my visit started with a cup of coffee and a doughnut. I took along an old photo album which I had bought from Ebay. The album includes all the aircraft used by the Luftwaffe during WW2. I’m quite sure the album dates back to the late 1940’s or early 1950’s. An 80 year old American lady sold the photo album she had found from her attic where it had stayed and collected dust for the last 40 years or so. We examined the album at the museum café and the boys where able to spot some photos even they hadn’t seen before. The museum’s researcher Mr. Timo Heinonen also checked the album and found some interesting rare photos. He commented that quite possibly the album was made right after WW2 by the U.S. government as a summary of all the aircraft types used by the Luftwaffe. Well, anyway I don’t believe that one could buy this kind of material from your local convenience store.

Now it’s back to work. Since my last visit the guys had installed the control column and the pilot’s oxygen bottle into the aircraft. The canopy seemed to be ready to be installed to its place. Pekka Nieminen was making a rack for the radio. The T.R. 9D radio came from the Air Force Signals Museum storage and this means that it was originally installed either into a Hurricane or a Gloster Gladiator fighter. Then again it is possible that it was also used in a Westland Lysander. The first radios used in British fighters came into service during the early 1930’s and the T.R. 9D in question dates back to 1937. It operates on HF frequency. At the outbreak of war it was discovered that the T.R. 9D’s were becoming obsolete fast and they were replaced with VHF radios by the end of 1940. The effective range of a HF radio was very limited. It was in the order of only about a few kilometres. This seems “quite modest” by modern standards. In practice you couldn’t hear a thing if you lost the sight of your wingman in the sky.

Pekka Nieminen is making a rack for the radio. Notice the new employee in the background.

Toinen hyvä esimerkki piirustuksista on koneen ohjaamon oikeanpuoleinen ”ovi”. Harri nikkaroi tätä ovea piirustuksien perusteella, josta löytyi myös tarkat ompeluohjeet mittoineen sekä materiaaleineen pienelle kangaspussille ohjaamon oveen. Harri uhrasi yhden valtion karttalaukun materiaaliksi ommellakseen tuon kangaspussin. Kun katselin tuon Harrin tekemän kangaspussin saumoja, niin en olisi heti uskonut, nehän olisi käynyt työnäytteenä ammoisina aikoina Tiklaksen tehtaalle. Museo voisikin harkita Harrille ompelukoneen ostoa, kun hänelle tulee seuraavat pyöreät vuodet täyteen museon palveluksessa. Itse muistelin, kun katselin Harrin tekemiä saumoja omat ala-aste ajat jolloin, pakotettiin rättikässään ja ompelukoneen ajokorttiin (ajoin aina ylinopeutta ja homma karkasi lapasesta), mistä ei tullut yhtään mitään. Ei siis kyseinen operaatio onnistuisi kirjoittajalta…

It was great to notice that the boys had pretty comprehensive and detailed blueprints available from different parts of the aircraft. For example the details of the radio rack were clear and precise. Another good example is the cockpit’s right “door” panel. Harri was using the detailed blueprints which included all the measurements needed for sewing a small fabric pouch to the cockpit door. He “sacrificed” one standard issue Finnish Army map case which he used for raw material for the pouch. When I looked at the seams of the pouch I was pretty much impressed. I think that the museum should consider buying Harri a sewing machine as a gift when he reaches a clear round number of years in the service of the museum. I couldn’t help wondering my old primary school days and all the compulsory sewing classes I had to take.

Ohjainsauva on ilmeisesti alunperin Brittien Harvard koneesta, jossa on melko vastaava ohjainsauva.

The control column seems to be from a British Harvard trainer, which was fitted with a similar type of control column. The control column used here came from Britain as a part of a swap of material. After some minor modifications it was fitted into the Hurricane. The Hurricane’s controls are based on control cables and there are no boosters or hydraulics involved. A pilot with a weak physique could not handle the Hurricane and force it into steep high speed curves. But then again back in the days of WW2 the pilots were made of steel and the planes out of wood and fabric. It is interesting that the standard British control column type consists of two separate parts. The lower part moves back and forward and the upper part moves from left to right. The pieces are connected with a joint and a special chain transmission. I couldn’t figure out the advantages of this arrangement, but then again I’m no engineer myself.

Ohjainsauva ja tuo insinöörien keksimä nivel.
The control stick and the joint invented by aircraft engineers.

Happipullo tuli kotimaisen keräilijän kautta. Lentäjän happipullo oli asennettu paikoilleen rungon sisälle istuimen taakse. Käsikirjan mukaan viiden litran pulloon mahtui ilmaa 750 litraa. Hapen määrän ja virtauksen mittari ja sulkuventtiili on mittaritaulun vasemmassa paneelissa kellon yläpuolella ja laskutelineen asennon osoittimen alapuolella. Ilmaa pullosta riittää lennon aikana noin 45 minuutiksi.

The oxygen bottle came via one Finnish collector. The pilot’s oxygen bottle was fitted to its place in the fuselage behind the pilot’s seat. According to the manual the 5 litre bottle could hold some 750 litres of air. The indicator which shows the amount of oxygen and the air flow is located on the left side of the panel above the clock and landing gear indicator together with the closing valve. The amount of air in the bottle was enough for a 45 minutes of flight time.

For conclusion I do have to comment that Harri and I received an interesting contact from New Zealand. A reporter from Classic Wings magazine contacted us and informed that he would be interested to do story on the restoration of the Hurricane. Now Harri and I must do some thinking for the material needed for the article. It will be published when the restoration project is completed and the Hurricane is ready for its roll-out ceremony. It’s a small world I should say.

To be continued…

Uusivuosi uudet kujeet, First visit of the year

English translation below this chapter.

Tänään oli tämän vuoden ensimmäinen visiitti museolle. Ajattelin, että voisin tällä kertaa pureskella hieman Hawker Hurricanen historiaa. Asia tuli puheeksi kun olin lähdössä museolta ja raotin hieman tulevaa blogia, jossa ajattelin kertoa koneen historiasta. Kysäisin lähdönpäällä, että olisiko museolla mitään materiaalia asiasta. Mikko otti myyntipöydältä tuoreen kirjan (Albatrossista Pilatukseen Suomen sotilaskoneet 1918-2010). Kirjasta löytyi hyvä ja napakka tietoisku Hurricanen historiasta, jota ajattelin käyttää lähteenä. Kirjan sain vielä lahjoituksena museon vt. johtajalta Rauni Valtoselta blogin pitämisestä :)

Today was my first visit at the museum for the year 2012. I thought that this time I’d start with a brief overview of the Hawker Hurricane fighter aircraft. The idea for this came up when I was about the leave the museum. I asked the guys whether they would have some related books available on the subject. The answer came quickly. Museum’s deputy director Mrs. Rauni Valtonen donated me a book from the museum’s own inventory called “Albatrossista Pilatukseen: Suomen sotilaskoneet 1918-2010”. This book is part of the museum’s own aviation book series. From this book I was able to pick up all the necessary details.

The chief designer of the British aviation company Hawker, Sydney Camm started to develop a low-wing fighter which hull structure was based on the successful Hawker Fury biplane fighter. The first flight of the prototype took place on November 6 1937. It was the first monoplane fighter aircraft of the Royal Air Force which had retractable landing gear.

Hurricane Prototyyppi K5083.
Hurricane Prototype K5083.
Tehokkaamalla moottorilla varustetun Hurricane IIA:n valmistus alkoi elokuussa 1940. Viimeinen tuotantomuunnos oli 1620hv:n moottorilla varustettu Hurricane IV, jonka valmistus loppui elokuussa 1944.

Nearly 500 Hurricane fighters had been build when the Second World War started. At that time the Hurricane was already a bit outdated as a first line fighter. It’s thick wing profile limited top speed and hindered further development efforts. Earlier production models had fabric covered wings. In late 1939 all metal wings started to appear in later production model Hurricanes. Starting from March 1940 all Hurricanes were fitted with all metal wings. The production of Hurricane IIA started in August 1940. It also carried a more powerful engine. Last production model Hurricane was known as Hurricane IV and it carried a 1620 hp engine. The production of Hurricane IV ended in August 1944.

Kaikkiaan Hurricanen eri muunnoksia rakennettiin 14 233 kpl, joista 1448 Kanadassa, kaksi Belgiassa ja 20 Jugoslaviassa. Lähes 3000 konetta vietiin Neuvostoliittoon.
Suomen ilmavoimat osti 17.2.1940 Isosta-Britanniasta 12 käytännössä uutta Hurricane I –konetta. Suomalaiset hakivat koneet Britanniasta, jossa he saivat lyhyen tyyppikoulutuksen. Koneet tuotiin lentämällä Pohjanmeren yli Skotlannista Norjaan. Siirtolennolla menetettiin kaksi. HU461 vaurioitui laskussa Wickissä Skotlannissa ja jäi sinne. HU462 tuhoutui törmättyään puhelinpylvääseen ohjaajan ”räimiessä” Stavangerin lähistöllä. Hurricanet saapuivat Suomeen 7-10.3.1940.  Niitä ei käytetty taisteluissa.

In total 14 233 Hurricanes were produced in several different types. 1 448 fighters were build in Canada, two in Belgium and 20 in Yugoslavia. Nearly 3 000 Hurricanes were send to the Soviet Union. The Finnish Air Force bought 12 practically new Hurricane Mk I’s from Britain on February 17 1940. The total flight times of these planes were just a few hours. The Hurricanes were part of RAF reserves which were taken out from storage and then sold to Gloster Aircraft Co. Gloster sold these planes to Finland. Some were fitted with fabric covered wings. Finnish pilots flew the planes to Finland from the UK. A selected group of Finnish pilots also received short training for the Hurricane while in Britain. The planes were flown over the North Sea from Scotland to Norway. Two Hurricanes were lost during the ferry flight. HU461 was damaged  during landing at Wick in Scotland and the plane was left there. HU462 was destroyed when the pilot hit a telephone poll near Stavanger in Norway. Hurricanes arrived in Finland between March 7 and March 10 1940. They saw no action during the Winter War.

The use of the legendary Hurricane fighter here in Finland remained insignificant because there were so few planes available to the Finnish Air Force. Also the shortage of spare parts was a limiting factor. A total of just 5½ aerial victories were achieved with the Hurricane. The opinion of Finnish fighter pilots was that the Hurricane was quite easy plane to fly because of its handling characteristics. However the plane was thought to be a bit clumsy at low flying altitudes. The plane was originally designed for altitudes above 4 000 meters. The Hurricane was the first fighter aircraft in Finnish Air Force inventory which exceeded 500 km/h in level flight.

Now it’s time to take a look at the repair shop and see what has happened to the Hurricane itself. This time some work had been done with the electrical wirings of the instrument panel. This kind of work takes time but it doesn’t show itself so clearly. Upper part for control stick, starting magneto switch and a priming pump had been received for the project. During this visit I spend most of my time taking photographs for Harri. He needed some pictures of the wiring system and different instrument panel switches. I also took an interest on the gun sight. The cross hair of the gun sight is reflected with light to the pilot’s front view. The light source is a small light bulb just below the gun sight. The light bulb itself can be changed even during flight. Three reserve light bulbs can also be found on the right side of the gun sight.
I started to think about a situation were you would be flying in a fierce dogfight and right in the middle of the fight your light bulb busts. You are just about to get the enemy plane on your cross hairs and something like this happens. But you don’t have to worry about the situation too long. You would just have to unclick the clip which holds the light bulb in place and screw one of your reserve bulbs in place. All this can be done while flying at speeds of 400 km/h dodging enemy bullets. Luckily there are three reserve light bulbs just in case you would accidentally drop one on the cockpit floor. After a successful change you would have to get behind the enemy plane and give him a full burst from your machine guns. I believe all this demonstrates quite clearly the innovative thinking typical for World War Two era aircraft. I don’t think that you could repair a modern F-18 Hornet just as easily in case your gun sight or head-up-display goes bust while on a combat mission.

Pullossa oleva ohjetekstikin (Use no oil or grease they cause explosions) jäljennettiin ja maalattiin uudelleen.

Among the other useful equipment the oxygen bottle was also removed from the plane. Suitable British type so called "wire bottle" was found from the museum storage. Bottle is named so because it's reinforced with a double layer of steel wire on the cylinder's flat part so that a higher pressure can be used than was originally intended. On the early Hurricanes this bottle was without wire reinforcement, this detail was confirmed from a photograph. It was also impossible to install the bottle on a rack in HC-452 with wire reinforcement on it's place. Valve on the bottle was exactly correct VD type as is mentioned in a manual. Also the oxygen pipe and it's assorted connector, that were never removed from the plane fitted perfectly on the bottle.
Wire reinforcement was removed from the bottle and it was sandblasted clean. After that it was repainted,  original warning text (Use no oil or grease they cause explosions) was naturally reproduced accurately.

Reissun lopuksi halusin kuvata Lauri Pekurin BW-372, joka on nähtävillä museossa.
Kone nostettiin 1998 elokuussa. Kuvassa taustalla omia sukelluskuvia sekä Lauri Pekuri koneen viimeinen lentäjä.

At the end of the visit I wanted to take a few pictures of the exhibition hall’s Brewster BW-372 flown by a Finnish fighter ace Lauri Pekuri. Just before this I challenged Harri for a coffee & doughnut at the museum coffee shop. After enjoying the necessary refreshments it was indeed time to take the photos. We took out the lights from the exhibition hall and I setup my flashes around the Brewster. The photo shoot proved to be quite a challenge. Below this text you can see the end result of the picture. I decided to place the Brewster below the surface of Lake Seesjärvi where it had ditched after a fierce air battle on June 25 1942. The plane was lifted from the lake in August 1998. I created the background using my own scuba diving pictures. I also placed the pilot Lauri Pekuri on the background.

Kuva itse kertokoon...
I think the picture speaks for itself…

The story of this visit ends now and I begin to make plans for my next visit.
And just one more message to Harri: The photoflash system works after all.

Pikkujoulu piipahdus

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air. Up, up the long delirious, burning blue, I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew - And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod The high untresspassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

Helsinki Malmin lentokenttä vuonna 1941. Katson kirkasta horisonttia tähtäimeni lävitse, käynnistän ensi kertaa Messerschmitt Bf 109:n. Kone pölläyttää bensankatkuiset savut ulos ja tärähtää käyntiin, naamassa välähtää pieni hymynpilkahdus. Nyt täytyy muistaa kouluttajan opit, siivekkeet, tehot viidessä sekunnissa täysille, kannuspyörän lukko pois, oikeaa pedalia, koska kone kampeaa nousukiidossa, reilu 200km/h vauhtia ja kevyt veto ylös. Helsinki aukeaa allani kirkkaassa aamussa, käyn tutustumassa Helsingin keskustaan ensi kertaa ilmasta.

Helsinki-Malmi Airport in 1941. I look at the bright horizon through my gunsight. I start the Messerschmitt Bf 109 for the first time. The plane’s engine starts and belches away some smoke. I start to smile a bit. Now I’ll have to remember the words of my instructor pilot. Flaps out, max power in 5 seconds, tailwheel has to be unlocked too. I’ll have to use the right foot pedal because of the infamous torque effect of the Bf 109. The takeoff speed will be around 200 km/h. The city of Helsinki glimmers in the morning sunlight. I will take a closer look of the city center from the air. The plane responds to my commands sharply and I’ll start to relax a bit. Now it’s time to do some aerobatics. After a couple of loops and barrel rolls I’ll start to look for the Malmi Airport again. I’ll start my approach and set the throttle to idle. I’ll lower the landing gear and the flaps out again. The runway closes really fast now and I’ll cut down the throttle completely while I pull up the nose a bit in order to cut down my airspeed. I’m over the runway now and my plane starts to stall! Quickly I open the throttle in order to keep my plane from stalling. As if by a miracle the plane straightens up just in time and after a couple of bumps I’ll execute a fair landing. Still my first flight nearly killed me. I’ll cut the engine and take a deep breath. I’ll climb out from the cockpit and notice that my hands are shaking. Then the illusion breaks away and I’m back at the aviation museum some 70 years later from the days of World War Two. The museum’s new Messerschmitt Bf 109 flight simulator really gave me a flight of a lifetime. During the very early stages of my flight I felt a bit dizzy because the 270 degree viewpoint of the simulator really turned the world around me when I executed my barrel rolls. The new flight simulator opens up for the general public in January. I highly recommend this to all the fans of military aviation.

Sitten taas itse asiaan, viime visiitistä onkin jo monta viikkoa.

Now it’s back to business as usual. It’s been a few weeks since my last visit to the museum. During this time the seasonal flu and annual holidays had visited the museum, so very little work had been done to the Hurricane. Also the guys had spend a whole month building the new flight simulator. However during this time the Hurricane had received a new canopy and a pair of SKIS ! This was new to me because I hadn’t expected to find a pair of  collapsible skis inside the plane’s fuselage. Apparently some innovative thinking had taken place in the world even before Toyota Yaris showed up J The skis had been cut from the middle and they were connected with a hinge. The ski poles were also manufactured the same way. A convenient hatch was also made during the war to the aircraft’s fuselage just for the skis. In the original Finnish pilot’s manual the skis were said to be handy even during summertime when crossing a wet marsh.

Hienoja ratkaisuja vanhassa koneessa.

Another interesting thing is the radiator, which during my visit was awaiting to be installed in place. Two pipes were leading out from the radiator. Originally they were filled with hot air and conducted to the wing’s gun emplacements. The purpose of all this was to keep the guns from freezing up during winter frost. I think this illustrates Finnish innovative thinking at its best.

Ilmaputki jäähdyttimeltä siiven asetilaan.
An airpipe from the radiator to the gun emplacement in the wing.

New plexiglas was also installed to the canopy and I noticed that the boys had clearly used their imagination for the shaping process. The plexiglas had to be heated in order to get it into correct shape and form. Just for this purpose they had build an oven. In my opinion they shouldn’t lose the oven because it looks just perfect for cooking too. Just one tip to the boys, for the next model you should mount a ventilator to the side of the oven in order to make it into a model which uses recirculated air :)

Electroluxin uutusmalli, huomatkaa päällä olevat lentokoneen lämpömittarit. Jokaisen poikamiesboksin perusvarustus :) Oven builded by boys, note the airplane thermometers :)

Kinkkuasiaan on hyvä lopetella tämänkertainen blogi ja toivottaa kaikille tasapuolisesti hyvää joulua. Palataan Hurricane asialla taas tammikuussa…

Merry christmas to all and happy new year! Blog will continue in january...

I stopped working at 2.45 PM on October 28 and off I went to the museum again. I arrived at the museum and wondered where the guys could be. I looked and saw that the repair shop was empty. I finally located the team at the museum cafeteria. It seemed that they were celebrating Antti’s birthday over a cup of coffee.

We went back to the repair shop and Harri told me that the Hurricane’s seat and its armored shielding was installed back to the cockpit. Some additional work had also taken place there. However there had been a one week pause on the restoration project because winter is approaching and all the MiG’s and Drakens on the museum yard had to be stored away to their tents which are located behind the museum building.

After quick introductions I took my camera and asked Harri what kind of pictures he would like me to take. This time the theme was photographing the seat, the belts and the partly assembled cockpit instrument panel. The cockpit really had changed from last time and I started to get an idea of its shape. There was nothing left of the instrument panel when the plane originally arrived to the museum. Now it too has started to get some shape when missing parts have been replaced from the stocks of private collectors. Next time I will definitely have to take a seat in the cockpit and just enjoy a bit of its unique feeling - if I can get a permission from Harri, of course :)

Penkki paikoillaan ja osa mittaritaulusta kiinnitetty.

Ajattelin tällä kertaa myös pureskella hieman tämän koneen ehkä tunnetuinta lentäjää Esko Ruotsilaa. Ruotsila syntyi Vesilahdella 6.6.1913.

This time I decided to talk a bit about the pilot of HC-452, Lieutenant Esko Ruotsila. He was born at Vesilahti on June 6 1913. He received flight training in the Finnish Air Force in 1934-35. In the Fall of 1937 Esko Ruotsila was assigned to Flying Squadron 12 as a Sergeant and later to Flying Squadron 10 as a 2nd Lieutenant. In March 1940 he was transferred to Flying Squadron 30. The last Finnish Air Force fighter squadron he served in was the 34th. He was killed in action on May 20 1943 over the Gulf of Finland when his Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-2 fighter was shot down by a Polikarpov I-153 fighter. Esko Ruotsila received several military decorations and he managed to score a total of 4,5 aerial victories during the war.

There was quite a traffic at the repair shop today. From time to time it looked like a main hall of a theatre during an intermission. An interesting character named Mr. Pertti Virtanen visited the repair shop. He is a retired air force mechanic who worked with Folland Gnat fighter jets during the 1960’s and 1970’s. He participated in the building of the museum’s Thulin Type D replica. He also took part in the restoration of the museum’s Martinsyde Buzzard as well as the very first restoration project conducted in the Finnish Air Force during the early 1970’s, the Gourdou-Leseurre. The museum director Mr. Kai Mecklin, who is on leave till June 2012 also visited the museum.

For conclusion I could say again that the work conducted at the repair shop is highly valuable. And I think that it should be brought out to the people more clearly too. I believe it would be great to show this restoration project particularly to World War Two Finnish Air Force veterans. It would be a great homage to them as well.
