Project Hawker Hurricane (HC-452)

The primary motivation behind this blog is my own personal interest towards old aircraft and photography which I am studying at the moment. I was granted a great opportunity by the Aviation Museum of Central Finland to photograph the restoration project of former Finnish Air Force Hawker Hurricane Mk. I HC-452 fighter aircraft. I tend to add weekly news from the project with photographs. I believe that this is also a good opportunity to show the hard behind the scenes work which takes place during a project like this.

Pikkujoulu piipahdus

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air. Up, up the long delirious, burning blue, I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew - And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod The high untresspassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

Helsinki Malmin lentokenttä vuonna 1941. Katson kirkasta horisonttia tähtäimeni lävitse, käynnistän ensi kertaa Messerschmitt Bf 109:n. Kone pölläyttää bensankatkuiset savut ulos ja tärähtää käyntiin, naamassa välähtää pieni hymynpilkahdus. Nyt täytyy muistaa kouluttajan opit, siivekkeet, tehot viidessä sekunnissa täysille, kannuspyörän lukko pois, oikeaa pedalia, koska kone kampeaa nousukiidossa, reilu 200km/h vauhtia ja kevyt veto ylös. Helsinki aukeaa allani kirkkaassa aamussa, käyn tutustumassa Helsingin keskustaan ensi kertaa ilmasta.

Helsinki-Malmi Airport in 1941. I look at the bright horizon through my gunsight. I start the Messerschmitt Bf 109 for the first time. The plane’s engine starts and belches away some smoke. I start to smile a bit. Now I’ll have to remember the words of my instructor pilot. Flaps out, max power in 5 seconds, tailwheel has to be unlocked too. I’ll have to use the right foot pedal because of the infamous torque effect of the Bf 109. The takeoff speed will be around 200 km/h. The city of Helsinki glimmers in the morning sunlight. I will take a closer look of the city center from the air. The plane responds to my commands sharply and I’ll start to relax a bit. Now it’s time to do some aerobatics. After a couple of loops and barrel rolls I’ll start to look for the Malmi Airport again. I’ll start my approach and set the throttle to idle. I’ll lower the landing gear and the flaps out again. The runway closes really fast now and I’ll cut down the throttle completely while I pull up the nose a bit in order to cut down my airspeed. I’m over the runway now and my plane starts to stall! Quickly I open the throttle in order to keep my plane from stalling. As if by a miracle the plane straightens up just in time and after a couple of bumps I’ll execute a fair landing. Still my first flight nearly killed me. I’ll cut the engine and take a deep breath. I’ll climb out from the cockpit and notice that my hands are shaking. Then the illusion breaks away and I’m back at the aviation museum some 70 years later from the days of World War Two. The museum’s new Messerschmitt Bf 109 flight simulator really gave me a flight of a lifetime. During the very early stages of my flight I felt a bit dizzy because the 270 degree viewpoint of the simulator really turned the world around me when I executed my barrel rolls. The new flight simulator opens up for the general public in January. I highly recommend this to all the fans of military aviation.

Sitten taas itse asiaan, viime visiitistä onkin jo monta viikkoa.

Now it’s back to business as usual. It’s been a few weeks since my last visit to the museum. During this time the seasonal flu and annual holidays had visited the museum, so very little work had been done to the Hurricane. Also the guys had spend a whole month building the new flight simulator. However during this time the Hurricane had received a new canopy and a pair of SKIS ! This was new to me because I hadn’t expected to find a pair of  collapsible skis inside the plane’s fuselage. Apparently some innovative thinking had taken place in the world even before Toyota Yaris showed up J The skis had been cut from the middle and they were connected with a hinge. The ski poles were also manufactured the same way. A convenient hatch was also made during the war to the aircraft’s fuselage just for the skis. In the original Finnish pilot’s manual the skis were said to be handy even during summertime when crossing a wet marsh.

Hienoja ratkaisuja vanhassa koneessa.

Another interesting thing is the radiator, which during my visit was awaiting to be installed in place. Two pipes were leading out from the radiator. Originally they were filled with hot air and conducted to the wing’s gun emplacements. The purpose of all this was to keep the guns from freezing up during winter frost. I think this illustrates Finnish innovative thinking at its best.

New plexiglas was also installed to the canopy and I noticed that the boys had clearly used their imagination for the shaping process. The plexiglas had to be heated in order to get it into correct shape and form. Just for this purpose they had build an oven. In my opinion they shouldn’t lose the oven because it looks just perfect for cooking too. Just one tip to the boys, for the next model you should mount a ventilator to the side of the oven in order to make it into a model which uses recirculated air :)

Kinkkuasiaan on hyvä lopetella tämänkertainen blogi ja toivottaa kaikille tasapuolisesti hyvää joulua. Palataan Hurricane asialla taas tammikuussa…

I stopped working at 2.45 PM on October 28 and off I went to the museum again. I arrived at the museum and wondered where the guys could be. I looked and saw that the repair shop was empty. I finally located the team at the museum cafeteria. It seemed that they were celebrating Antti’s birthday over a cup of coffee.

We went back to the repair shop and Harri told me that the Hurricane’s seat and its armored shielding was installed back to the cockpit. Some additional work had also taken place there. However there had been a one week pause on the restoration project because winter is approaching and all the MiG’s and Drakens on the museum yard had to be stored away to their tents which are located behind the museum building.

After quick introductions I took my camera and asked Harri what kind of pictures he would like me to take. This time the theme was photographing the seat, the belts and the partly assembled cockpit instrument panel. The cockpit really had changed from last time and I started to get an idea of its shape. There was nothing left of the instrument panel when the plane originally arrived to the museum. Now it too has started to get some shape when missing parts have been replaced from the stocks of private collectors. Next time I will definitely have to take a seat in the cockpit and just enjoy a bit of its unique feeling - if I can get a permission from Harri, of course :)

Ajattelin tällä kertaa myös pureskella hieman tämän koneen ehkä tunnetuinta lentäjää Esko Ruotsilaa. Ruotsila syntyi Vesilahdella 6.6.1913.

This time I decided to talk a bit about the pilot of HC-452, Lieutenant Esko Ruotsila. He was born at Vesilahti on June 6 1913. He received flight training in the Finnish Air Force in 1934-35. In the Fall of 1937 Esko Ruotsila was assigned to Flying Squadron 12 as a Sergeant and later to Flying Squadron 10 as a 2nd Lieutenant. In March 1940 he was transferred to Flying Squadron 30. The last Finnish Air Force fighter squadron he served in was the 34th. He was killed in action on May 20 1943 over the Gulf of Finland when his Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-2 fighter was shot down by a Polikarpov I-153 fighter. Esko Ruotsila received several military decorations and he managed to score a total of 4,5 aerial victories during the war.

Muita ilmavoimien kuuluisuuksia: majuri Erkki Olavi Ehrnrooth (ko. laivueen komentaja) istuu viidentenä vasemmalta laskien.

There was quite a traffic at the repair shop today. From time to time it looked like a main hall of a theatre during an intermission. An interesting character named Mr. Pertti Virtanen visited the repair shop. He is a retired air force mechanic who worked with Folland Gnat fighter jets during the 1960’s and 1970’s. He participated in the building of the museum’s Thulin Type D replica. He also took part in the restoration of the museum’s Martinsyde Buzzard as well as the very first restoration project conducted in the Finnish Air Force during the early 1970’s, the Gourdou-Leseurre. The museum director Mr. Kai Mecklin, who is on leave till June 2012 also visited the museum.

For conclusion I could say again that the work conducted at the repair shop is highly valuable. And I think that it should be brought out to the people more clearly too. I believe it would be great to show this restoration project particularly to World War Two Finnish Air Force veterans. It would be a great homage to them as well.

Toinen visiitti, Second visit.

Saavuin torstaina melkein ajoissa museolle katsastamaan mitä muutaman viikon aikana Hurricanelle oli tapahtunut. Pojat löytyivät museon kirjastosta, missä he selvittelivät käytöstä poistuneiden Migien, Drakenien ja Fougien kohtaloita ja nykyisiä omistajia. Melkoista salapoliisin työtä tuo projekti tuntui olevan.

I arrived at the museum on Thursday to check out all the latest news on the Hurricane. I found the guys from the museum library where they were conducting some research on former Finnish Air Force MiG-21’s, Saab Drakens and Fouga Magisters. They were trying to find out their exact fates and present owners. It looked like a real detective story to me.

Back to the main point now. I promised to tell a bit more on the history of Hurricane HC-452 and a bit more on the restoration team. The Hurricane was flown from Britain to Finland on March 7 1940. It was piloted then by Sergeant Uuno Karhumäki. The blue Finnish swastikas had to be painted over for the duration of the ferry flight because a swastika symbol in the sky would otherwise had been a temptive target for British anti-aircraft gunners.

The plane was handed over to Detachment Räty and Flying Squadron 22. The HC-452 served in several Finnish Air Force fighter squadrons during the war, the last being Flying Squadron 26. The Hurricane logged a total of 208 hours and 15 minutes of flying time in the service of the FAF. A total of 2,5 aerial victories were achieved with it. The most famous pilot who flew the HC-452 was Lieutenant Esko Ruotsila. He scored the most kills with the type.

At the present time the restoration team is formed by three full-time employees of the museum. Harri Huopainen is in charge of the project. The other team members are Ville Siltanen, Antti Lappalainen, Arvo Hirvonen (part-time retired) and Pekka Nieminen (part-time employee).

Tähän mennessä työstä on suoritettu purku, puuttuvien osien listaus, puhdistus ja sisäpuolen metallirakenteiden suojakäsittely. Puuttuvia osia on täydennetty osittain museon varastosta löytyneillä osilla. Suuri apu on ollut englantilaisesta yhteistyökumppanista, jonka kautta museo on vaihtokauppasopimuksen nojalla saanut hankittua suuria määriä Hurricanen materiaalia, mm oikeanlaisen moottorin.

So far the the plane has been disassembled and its missing parts have been listed. It has been cleaned and the interior metal structures have received a blocking layer. Missing parts have been replaced with parts found from the museum’s own stockpiles. The museum has also co-operated with a private British partner. Through this co-operation and swaps of material, the museum has for example received certain Hurricane parts and a correct Merlin engine. The plane’s marking and painting details have been documented all along the duration of the project. Some corrective work has taken place in different parts of the structure. For example the rudder has been patched as well as the cushion from the pilot’s armoured seat. Some riveting has been replaced too.

This week the team has worked with the seat and with the canopy. The plane didn’t have any armored shielding when it arrived in Finland. I can only imagine what it would have been like to fly into a storm of bullets without any armor plating, no thanks! After some demands from the pilots the Hurricane’s seat was soon after arrival fitted with 10mm steel plates. The seat was covered with these plates which protected the pilot from small calibre bullets. When the guys disassembled the seat to pieces they discovered the original fitting pieces of the armor plates in question. Quite probably these were made on the spot using Finnish pinewood. The shape of the fitting pieces had been perfected with an axe. You can’t even compare rudimentary World War Two maintenance standards with present day factory quality control. Actually it would be interesting and possibly even fun to put a seat of a Hurricane right next to seat taken from Finnish  F-18 Hornet and compare these two :)

Alumiinijakkara ja suomalaisten tekemät lisävarusteet istuimeen.
An aluminium seat with Finnish designed wooden fitting accessories for attaching seatarmor.

Edessä on kuitenkin paksu panssarilasi naaman suojana.

The canopy had been detached from the plane. It looked quite scary when you think that only a thin layer of protective material stood between the pilot and the outside air. The hull of the canopy is made from aluminium and a thin layer of acrylic glass was attached to it. One might think that during the 1940’s even a small bug or an insect would come through the canopy at those speeds which were typical for the Hurricane. However right in front of the pilot’s face there’s a thick armored glass which is installed for protective purposes

Bonuksena pääsin kurkistamaan siipien yläpinnassa olevia aseiden huoltoluukkuja. Ihmettelin luukkujen todella hyvää kuntoa, aseiden paikat näyttivät aivan uudenveroisilta. Tietenkin mielessäni ajattelin nuo neljä kappaletta 7.7mm konekivääriä, jotka aikoinaan murjoivat venäläisten koneita. Tämän koneen tarkoitus on ollut yksinkertainen, ampua alas kaikki itsenäisyyttä uhkaavat koneet. Tällä hetkellä osissa oleva konevanhus alkaa herättämään kunnioitusta entistäkin enemmän kirjoittajassa…

As a bonus I was allowed to take a peak at the maintenance hatches of the machine guns. These are located on the upper wing structure. I wondered the amazingly good condition of the hatches. They looked like new to me. Naturally I thought about those four 7,7mm machine guns which hammered Russian planes during the war. The purpose of this aircraft was simple: to shoot down all enemy planes which were a threat to Finland’s independence. At this moment the old warbird starts to create a lot of respect in me.

Ensi kerralla pureudun enemmän vänrikki Esko Ruotsilaan ja ehkä saan tänne muutamia kuvia hänen lentopäiväkirjastaan. Tietysti silmitellään taas mitä pojat on saanut aikaiseksi seuraavalla kerralla entisöintipuolella...

Next time I will write a bit more on the pilot, Lieutenant Esko Ruotsila. Maybe I will even get some pictures of his flight log books here.

Alku, Beginning.

Today I officially started this blog. I went to the Aviation Museum of Central Finland to meet the museum’s conservator Harri Huopainen who’s in charge of the Hurricane restoration project. Today’s visit was a fairly quick one, so I just took a few general pictures. The museum started this project back in the Fall of 2010, so I wasn’t there on the spot in the very beginning.

Today the boys tried to install the engine, but the attempt came to nothing this time when the tackles used in the operation failed. The boys were also grinding the planes swastika national insignias from the fuselage and the from its wings. The original World War Two era Finnish Air Force swastikas were painted over several times after the war.

Next time I will write about the history of the plane and on the personalities who work on this project. Now this blog has officially been started and I believe that the coming winter is going to an interesting one with this classic WW2 warbird.
